What’s the worst thing about riding a motorbike?   Insects in your throat ….  soaking wet pants …. aching muscles?  Nah, it’s got to be Helmet Hair!  You arrive at your destination, dapper and ready to enjoy a cold beer and some live rock n roll, but your hair’s plastered to your head in a bath of sweat and bad partings.

That’s what gave Auckland Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) organisers Mike Andrews, and Julian Maloney of Maloney’s Barber Shop, the idea to set up at the ride’s after-party to sort out those messy mops.

DGR 2017 saw 92,000 riders in 580 cities take part in this global gathering of vintage and classic motorbikes. Raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and male suicide prevention, on behalf of charity partner The Movember Foundation.  September 24th was a beauty in the City of Sails, after 2016’s deluge which was more like swimming than riding ……..

~ Thanks to Uppercut Deluxe we managed to rescue plenty of helmet hair – read the full story on the Uppercut Deluxe blog ~

Maloney’s friend Ygnacio Cervio (above and below) is the founder of the NZ Beard and Moustache Championship, now in its fourth year – head along to the King’s Arms on Friday October 27th for a great parade of beards and mos, all raising money for mental health charities.

Ygnacio also recently headed to the World Beard and Moustache Championship in Austin, Texas.  There, his hard campaigning paid off and lil’ ol’ New Zealand was named as host of the World Champs in 2021!

He popped by the shop for a quick trim and to share his beard growing tips with Julian and the crew – check out the story and beard growing tips here:

How do you pick your barber shop?  It’s often about location (near to work or home), but you’ve got to get consistently good cuts and cheerful banter too.

Auckland is lucky to have some awesome barber shops in the CBD and our friends at Denizen have picked the creme de la creme – check out their round up of Auckland’s finest barbers – we’re on there of course, and we’re in good company!

Cheers Denizen!

“When Julian Maloney shampooed Thea Muldoon’s hair in Remuera as a teenager he never expected being a barber would become the “blossoming, recognised, respected” career path people talked about today.

But after 30 years in the hair industry, the owner of Auckland’s popular Maloney’s Barber Shop has seen barbering’s popularity ramp up like never before.”

Stuff.co.nz visited Maloney’s to chat about the booming barbering industry.

Check out the full story and video here.

Cheers Stuff!

Earlier this year the Maloney’s crew went along to BarberCraft, NZ’s first barber expo and battles.

Barbers, trade and members of the public from all over NZ (and Australia) went along to share techniques, shoot the breeze and fight it out in the Barber Battles.  Two of our apprentice barbers, Matt Edwards and Cole Weldon, won their categories (Shave and Classic).  We were also lucky to host the talented Matt Brown and his crew from My Fathers Barbers in Christchurch, while they prepped their models with amazing hair art.

All the info on how to enter is on their Facebook page.

There’s a new category for ‘Whiskerina’ (woman with fake beard or mo) so even the ladies can take part.

All proceeds go to the Child Cancer Foundation – so get along and join in the fun even if you’re beard-free.

See you there!

We were schoolkid-excited when we discovered Australasia has its own barber trade publication, The Cutthroat Journal.  Even more so when they decided to run a story on us in the most recent edition.

Check it out here: Maloney’s in The Cutthroat Journal

Apparently women are a bit suspicious about what men really talk about with their barber.

Maloney’s friend, writer Alexia Santamaria, needed to check it out so she wrote a short piece about Maloney’s, men, Richie McCaw and more in the NZ Herald Online.
